Checking Mouth Care for Cancer Patients

Daily oral and dental care is essential for all of us, and especially when the mouth area is affected by therapy. Chemotherapy for tumors in any part of the body can affect the mouth, (whereas radiation therapy affects the mouth only when applied directly). Brushing and flossing natural teeth should be brushed daily (and preferably after each meal, large or small) with the use of a soft-bristle toothbrush. A small amount of toothpaste is useful when brushing, excessive amounts do not make up for inadequate brushing and flossing. Flossing is an effective way to clean between the teeth, but your doctor may decide that it would be too irritating for your gums. Ask his or her advice also about massaging the toungue and gums, another element in mouth care.

Inadequate oral hygiene leads to bad breath, gum irritation , pyorrhea and tooth decay. Since the effects of tumor therapy can limit the extent of your mouth care, it is very important to take care of this area before the therapy is begun. Denture Care Dentures, like natural teeth, should be cleaned at least once a day. Remember to brush inside and out with a denture brush, no toothpaste is necessary. Do this over a sink or bowl containing a few inches of water -if the dentures are dropped, then they’re less likely to be damaged. If you are in home health care, then you can have your caregiver help you. After brushing, you can soak the dentures in water, or in a commercial denture cleaner if you wish, but remember, soaking does not take the place of thorough brushing. With the dentures removed, rinse your mouth vigorously with water or, again, a commercial mouth rinse. These simple procedures, when done daily after every meal or snack, will keep your mouth in the best possible health. Mouth Sores Some types of therapy, problem is, it causes mouth sores and irritated gums (mucositis), and measures beyond simple home care hygiene may be needed. Once you have mouth sores, stay away from irritating or spicey foods. Eat a bland, soft diet. Remove your dentures until the sores heal. Rinse four times daily with a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution diluted to half strength with water.

If you think this solution is too irritating to your mouth, continue diluting the solution until it no longer has this effect. You may also try a commercial mouthwash (such as Cepacol®). If your gums bleed very easily or are tender, use swabs, Toothettes®, or a damp cloth to clean your teeth and gums. Other non-irritating appliances are also available commercially.  Dry Mouth If dry mouth is a problem, your doctor may suggest an artificial “saliva” (such as Zero-lube®, or Saliva-aid®) but these products are not always successful. Another solution may be a saliva stimulant (such as Pilocarpine®). A simple and often effective remedy for dry-mouth is frequent rinses with water and sucking on ice chips. Sugarless tart candies or chewing gum may also help. The problem should not be ignored; keeping your mouth moist is essential both to oral care and to comfort if you are in homecare.

Do You Have Bleeding Gums? Do Not Fool Around With This Problem…

I once heard from a woman who told me that her gums bled frequently. She said that she has blood in her mouth when she wakes up after sleeping. She also said she couldn’t afford to go to the dentist.

I told her that she must go. Chances are she has gum disease, but she needs a dentist or doctor to diagnose the situation and rule out anything more serious.

This brings up an important point. Bleeding gums are not normal at all. Usually, if your gums bleed while brushing or flossing it is likely indicative of gum disease.

One tool that might be useful is the hydrofloss . It works by using a stream of water to help reduce bacterial and plaque build up.

Those crazy little bacteria might find their way into the bloodstream via those openings. Whether that situation can lead to something worse or not is still being investigated.

The hydro floss is actually an oral irrigator with special properties. It uses a patented technology that allows it to do a more effective job than a ‘regular’ irrigator

In any case, the possibility of losing one’s teeth is real. And that is a situation that should be avoided.

In my personal experience, I was a patient of the same dentist for many years. I knew my gums bled during those every-six-month cleanings but I didn’t know that meant I had gum disease. They didn’t tell me that. I thought this was normal, as do many people. Then one day they suggested that I get a scaling and root planing treatment. They also told me that I had lost bone mass and that if things progressed I could lose my teeth.

Fortunately, I had enough sense to do a little research. This is why I like to write about the about the hydrofloss . I believe it is a powerful tool for dental health

Relax – Gingivitis is Reversible..

Relax, there is good news if you have this condition. Gingivitis is the reversible form of gum disease. If caught early enough it will not progress to the advanced stages of periodontal disease. If you only have this mild form of the disease, you should be able to reverse it and prevent tissue loss.

How did you get it? There are many types of bacteria in our mouth. When you think about it, you might realize that the mouth is one of the dirtiest parts of your body. You can never fully get rid of these bacteria.

First, when you try to wipe them out, you never get all of them. Second, you are always eating or drinking – every day. Therefore, new bacteria can enter your mouth relatively easily.

The key point is that not all of the bacteria in your mouth are ‘bad’. There are only certain species of bacteria that will cause problems like gum disease or bad breath. In fact, I think researchers are still discovering which strains of bacteria are a problem and which are not.

There are several strains that can cause gingivitis. Here is what typically may happen. You build up plaque daily. Plaque is a sticky substance that develops as a combination of things such as bacteria, saliva, very small food substances, etc.

Some items that may help:

1.An ozone generator  can be a powerful tool for dental health that may help you to stop gingivitis before it gets a chance to take hold. You might simply ozonate wate and use it as a mouthwash.

2. Therabreath might help with special mouthwash that was designed for fighting gum disease.

Another item that might be useful is the essential oil blend called ora md.

Once the plaque forms it creates a nice place for the ‘bad’ bacteria to live, grow and reproduce. When the plaque grows it manufactures a shield against oxygen, something this type of bacteria doesn’t like. They then secrete toxins that harm your teeth and gums.

Be advised this article is for information purposes only and does not intend to offer diagnosis or treatment advice. If you have or think you could have gum disease or any other type of health problem, visit your periodontist or physician for advice, diagnosis and treatment. What You Should Know About What Causes Gum Disease

treating gum disease

When talking about oral health, it is important to know how to prevent gum disease. Gum disease can actually be a serious health risk for the body. Proper dental hygiene is important for overall health and not just for a clean mouth. There are many different things that causes gum disease, but with proper dental habits it is not likely that you will ever get it, and in the event that you do, then there are many different treatments available.

Gum disease is a condition that causes inflamed gums, rotting them slowly away, and, if left untreated, then it can destroy the whole structure of the mouth and jaw. Gingivitis is actually a gum infection. Early stages will appear as swollen, red, sensitive teeth and gums, and it can progress rapidly from there. Once gum disease is contracted, it can become a chronic problem for some people. In later stages of gum disease, a puss-like discharge can appear on the gums.

The causes of gum disease can vary. The number one cause is poor dental hygiene. What happens in this case is that plaque builds up from infrequent brushing, and in time, turns into tartar. The tartar is an irritant to the gums, which then causes the swelling and irritation. Smokers are at least twice as likely to get some kind of gum disease. Teenagers, pregnant women and women in menopause are at a higher risk as well. There are many other conditions that can contribute to gum disease, such as high exposure to metals, radiation, poorly fitted fillings, and others.

There are a lot of treatments for gum disease. The treatment method usually depends on what causes gum disease in the first place. Many vitamins are used in treating gum disease, such as vitamin E, vitamin A, copper, folic acid and zinc. These keep the mouth and gum line in good health. Some doctors recommend drinking a glass of warm lemon water every day to avoid gum disease. Liver cleanses are also done. There are many different herbal treatments for gingivitis, such as placing aloe vera on the swollen gums, or brushing with baking soda. Your dentist might advise you to rinse your mouth out with salt water to clear the infection. There are also anesthetic ointments that are used to help sooth the gums. In the worst case scenario, gum surgery must be done to fully erase the damaged gums.

No one really wants to get gum disease. It is actually pretty easy to prevent through regular brushing and flossing. This will ensure that you have healthy gums and teeth. Smokers have to be extra careful about preventing gum disease because they are at a higher risk. What causes gum disease can be anything from lack of brushing to an infection caught somewhere. Even so, there are a lot of treatments for gum disease, so there is no real reason to worry.

Learn the benefits of having a homebirth

The birthing of a baby is one of the most cherished moments of a woman’s life.  The experience of delivering a new life is like no other.Although it has an enormous amount of pain, most women agree that it is well worth it.

As a San Diego midwife I would like to share with you a method that you might not be aware of.It is also known as waterbirth.

Waterbirth has been described as one of the gentlest ofmethods of deliveries.  It requires the use of a heatedwater bath or a pool.  Some women use the water just for the labor part. They will do it because heated water is actually a good pain reliever. It soothes and relaxes the tissues.

Other women also use it to deliver the baby. They don’t leave the water till the delivery is all the way through.  Even all the way through delivering the placenta.

The whole process is usuallly performed and helped by someone called a midwife.  If you are in San Diego there are plenty of midwives San Diego.  You will want to find an experienced one.

Why do quite a few women pick this way of delivering over the hosptial method? As mentioned previously, it is very painful the labor and delivery part.  Most women use drugs to cope with the pain.  But for some women, they don’t want drugs for fear of harming the baby.Using this method of waterbirth helps reduce the pain.Because of the
water heated it is soothing to the tissues and helps reduce the pain.

Most women will have this procedure usually done naturally. They won’t ask or use any drugs to help lessen the pain of labor and delivery.Often what this does is cause the labor and delivery to happen a lot faster.Because using drugs actually can cause the labor to slow down.

It is actually a very safe alternative of delivery.  For women looking to having their baby naturally this might be the way to go.  I have seen many happy deliveries as a San Diego licensed midwife.  All it takes for a woman is to research and see
how safe it really is.

How To Get A Professional Dallas Dentist

Going for a dental treatment almost always isn’t something many of us look forward to. It is not not the sort of appointment that we are most keen to attend. Often we may wish the date will wish the date will be moved or cancelled. Dentists are potentially the most feared among health practitioners. Kids regularly behave like meek lambs when told they are to be sent to the dentist as punishment for behaving badly. The majority of us have been afraid of dentists since we were young. Frequently we stick with the dentist our family knows for years but it is also wise to judge if our dentist is providing us with sufficient treatment. If not, it is maybe best to search out a new and better expert. Moving to a new place also presents the difficulty to find a good dentist. Moreover, there are numerous of us who do not have a regular dentist.

How do you find a new and good dentist? Your first instinct could be flipping the yellow pages and letting your fingers do the searching. Although most of us will do just that, finding a new dentist through the yellow pages and local dental societies are not wonderful ideas. They could have a complete list of dentists in the area however, they don’t guage them and do not evaluate them and do not give you can try these sources:

1 – Check if there is a dental school nearby. Dental schools are good for fine practicing dentists. You can call and ask for the names of the practicing faculty members.

2 – Check for surgeries and heath care centers that provide dental services in your area. The dentist in charge in those facilities may be able to supply you with good suggestions. The dentist in charge may actually know the reputes and performances of his comrades practicing in the area.

3 – You can ask an orthodontist or a periodontist if you know one. They are going to be in a position to counsel to you a good general practitioner. These experts should be familiar with the kind of work referring dentists do.

4 – If you are moving to a new place, you can ask your present dentist if he knows of a good dentist in your new location.

Your new dentist should carry out a preventive approach. This suggests that on your first visit he should perform a thorough medical and dental history with a complete head and neck examination. Head and neck exam is mostly done on the patient’s first visit and every six months thereafter.

Your dentist should offer you with the way on how to take care of your teeth and perform good oral hygiene. These are the preventative measures in fighting against dental rot and other dental problems.

Your dentist should invite you back for regular check-ups. This may make sure that no problem will be left unchecked. The dental hygienist should perform oral prophylaxis or dental cleaning after each six months.

Your dentist should take x-rays more responsibly. Full series of X-rays should be taken only once each 5 years or so. Not taking any X-ray’s on the other hand is as bad as taking X-rays too often.

Your dentist and dental hygienist should practice proper care against infection. They should wear rubber gloves and a mask when dealing with their patients. Your dentist should be ardent in explaining to you any sanitary procedures his hospital is implementing and or using to protect his patients and himself against unwished-for infections. Finding a best dentist is not really so troublesome only if you know the way to handle it.

Education on Dallas Dental Care Keeps the Price Tags Down

Dental treatment can be dear even if you have dental insurance. Most insurance covers basic cleaning and fillings, as well as x-rays and extractions. However, unless you have the best coverage, you could be responsible for partial payment on procedures like root canals, teeth bleaching, gum surgery and cosmetic dentistry. If you don?t have insurance cost for dental care can be astronomical.

Dental treatment typically involves comparatively cheap diagnostic measures and if tooth decay or consequent illnesses are diagnosed early, the treatment is less expensive. So, education on Dallas TX dental care and early treatment are good paths to keep the cost down. However, there are methods to lower the cost of your dental care either through your place of work or through low-income, community dental medicare programs.

In a place of employment, an employee is generally offered a few dental plan options. The plans range between basic care coverage to the best dental care coverage you can get. The employer may pay any part of an once per month premium to the dental insurance. When the worker is seen by a dentist, depending on the cover, he may have to pay for has much as half or as little as nothing for the process. Some kinds of treatment would possibly not be covered under this plan at all.

For example, cosmetic dentistry is in generally not covered by any insurance, as it isn’t considered necessary dental care. In many low income community dental health plans, the only coverage is for the least costly alternate treatment ( LEAT ) that is listed by the insurance company. For example, if there’s the option of a root canal or extraction the insurance company will pay for the extraction because it is less expensive.

In Dallas, there are many private dental clinics and healthcare corporations that offer minimal cost dental service. Check the local phone book or browse the web for a proffesional Dallas dentists available now.
