A dentist’s office doesn’t need to be a terrifying place, but unfortunately, lots of people postpone or avoid making necessary dental appointments because of a bad childhood experience, fear of needles, or what is commonly referred to as dental phobia. We all know, routine dental work, which includes teeth cleaning, can prevent much more extensive or painful work at a later date. However, if painful work is required, the stress level can be reduced substantially. Many dentists today offer sedation dentistry as a way to make those office visits easier on patients.

Sedation dentistry can be utilized in a wide variety of dental procedures, from the simple cleaning, to a root canal or extraction. It’s used, not only to limit the actual physical discomfort of the procedure, but also to address the general phobia that a patient could have. It is a good alternative to get those who really fear going into the office for a cleaning or other essential procedures.

You can get four different types of sedation, and each is useful for specific anesthetic and psychological needs. Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is a well-known and traditionally used sedative that induces a general sense of well-being and relaxation in the patient. Nitrous oxide is regarded as a light sedative. Once the person is relaxed, a local anesthetic can be used to limit pain for more intense procedures. The down side to this sedation is that some individuals don’t tolerate the gas very well.

Oral sedatives, often called sleep dentistry but more accurately termed “conscious sedation,” is now the most widely used technique to reduce anxiety in the dental office. Dentists generally prefer patients to be awake so that they are responsive. With this method, the patient will feel sleepy throughout the office visit, but is not going to actually lose consciousness. The sedative can be given thirty minutes to an hour before an appointment, and can be used with a local anesthetic depending upon the actual procedure being completed.

Intravenous (IV) sedation has comparable effects as oral tranquilizers, in that the sufferer can remain conscious in a state of deep relaxation through the office visit. However, the sedative is applied through an IV, and a local anesthetic may also be necessary to eliminate pain. It is used in the same types of procedures as either nitrous oxide or oral sedatives, but should be administered by the dentist and monitored throughout the procedure.

Deep sedation, in the form of general anesthesia, is also used in some offices. However the patient will not be able to communicate with the staff, and may even need assistance with breathing if there are problems keeping his or her airway open. General anesthesia is reserved for in-depth oral surgery due to the inherent potential complications that can arise with this particular method.

Whether you are in need of a good cleaning, or are having a more intricate procedure, sedation dentistry can help relieve the strain of seeing the dentist. Don’t let your anxiety keep you from having a healthy beautiful smile.

Ever wonder how the celebrities project that beautiful Hollywood smile effortlessly? Their flawless teeth is the main source of their confidence. Cosmetic dentistry has helped a lot of Hollywood stars maintain such good-looking set of teeth, which is very important in their public roles of being in the entertainment industry. Smiling In front of the camera, candid or not gives out a valued impact to their public images.

So, do you wish to get hold of that same level of confidence as those celebrities? You can now actually do so since cosmetic dentistry makes it happen. A dental field of combined art and science aiming for proper dental health as well as improving and optimizing aesthetics and function.

There are actualy several procedures you can choose from. Below are examples of these procedures and how they are being conducted.

• Teeth Whitening

Also known as “dental bleaching” is the most commonly performed dental procedure. This resolves teeth discoloration from too much tea or coffee drinking as well as too much smoking. There are different methods of performing this dental procedure and some can actually be done at home. The At-home whitening procedure is done by applying bleaching gel using thin guard trays or using small strips that go over the front teeth. Another bleaching method is the laser bleaching that uses light energy to accelerate the process of bleaching in a dental office.

• Contouring

Also called as tooth reshaping. This procedure is done to correct crooked teeth, chipped teeth, cracked or even overlapping teeth in just one session to alter the length, shape or position of the teeth. This may take a few millimeters of reduction and a few millimeters of tooth-colored laminate. This procedure can also be substituted for braces under certain considerations.

• Bonding

This method uses an enamel-like composite material applied to the tooth’s surface, sculpted into shape, hardened, and then polished.

The breakthrough of cosmetic dentistry does not only address those dental imperfections to satisfiy one’s vanity but most importantly, uplift one’s self-esteem and confidence. You are actually doing yourself a huge favor by reconstructing your smile and improving yourself healthwise.

Most dental procedures require the utilization of sedation medication or anesthesia. With the developments in dental art technology, anesthesia care is said to be 50 times safer today than it was 20 years ago, that is according to the report conducted by the Institute of Medicine. Ultimately, the goal of anesthesia is to provide a safe surgical environment for the patient to achieve a desired level of comfort during the dental procedure and to allow the oral surgeon to focus on the operation.

How does sedation differ from general anesthesia?

Generally, sedation dentistry employs medication to alleviate the levels of anxiety during a dental procedure. The patient will be put in a deep state of relaxation by administering oral or intravenous sedation. The amount of sedation medication and anesthesia is administered on graduated levels following the patient’s treatment plan.

General anesthesia uses intravenous or inhalation agents to put the patient in complete sleep. The patient is in a state of complete sleep and does not recall the details of the dental procedure as opposed to sedation wherein the patient is conscious and is able to respond to verbal commands.

On both procedures, the anesthesia specialist monitors the vital signs for any changes in the heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels in the blood.

Patients who experience mild levels of anxiety and fear may qualify for oral sedation. With this kind of sedation technique, the treating dentist prescribes oral pills to be taken at least an hour before the procedure. In some cases, nitrous oxide or commonly known as laughing gas is also administered. Oral sedation, however, is not recommended for very young children.

For patients who require complex dental treatment and would like to finish the procedure with fewer dental visits, intravenous conscious sedation is administered. This procedure is another alternative for patients who experience mild levels of anxiety and fear. With this technique, the patient is conscious but hardly remembers the procedure.

Patients who have special needs, dental phobics and hard to restrain patients especially very young children are the perfect candidates for general anesthesia.

In South Florida, a team of Fort Lauderdale dentists specialize in sedation dentistry and the utilization of anesthesia management technique. All dentists have completed and are in compliance with the required education, training and experience prescribed by the state and the dental industry’s regulating body.

As not all dentists are licensed to administer general anesthesia and practice sedation dentistry, it is important to check the dentist’s background and education before making a commitment.

Patients with disabilities require special attention when undergoing dental procedures. These patients are hard to restrain and have difficulties remaining still for extended periods especially in the case of complex dental surgery. The treating dentist puts the patient in a deep state of relaxation or complete sleep by administering sedation medication or general anesthesia. Patients with disabilities can find dental care solution with sedation and sleep dentistry.

Patients with physical and developmental disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, Down syndrome, Parkinson’s and those who have behavior problems require the expertise of a certified sleep dentist. Their situation demands special care and attention different from the regular dental procedures performed on non-special needs patients.

How does sedation and sleep dentistry work?

First, the treating dentist will evaluate the needs of the patient. After identifying the needs of the patient only then a treatment plan will be prepared. The levels of sedation varies with each case. Some patients are easily put into a relaxed state while others require more sedative drugs before they can achieve the desired level of deep relaxation. In other cases such as patients with severe mental disabilities, it is important to put them to complete sleep.

During surgery, the sedation is administered through a combination of breathing mask and medication. Laughing gas or nitrous oxide will gradually put them in a relaxed state. The patient’s treatment plan determines whether oral or intravenous medication is appropriate. These are administered in graduated levels until such time complete relaxation is achieved.

In the past, these procedures are performed in the hospital where proper facilities are available. Patients nowadays can have their dental surgery right at the dentist’s clinic without the need to check in the hospital. These dentists and anesthesiologists have secured general anesthesia permits from the state and have undergone training to comply with state requirements in the administration of anesthesia.

Not all dentists are licensed to perform sedation and sleep dentistry. Make sure to do a background check before committing to a dentist.

If you’re an executive who couldn’t spend a whole day in the dentist’s office for a complex dental procedure, you’re not alone in your dilemma. Having your tooth problem solved is just as important as the next business conference. Dealing with tooth problems during a business meeting is the last thing you want to be bothered with. Dealing with a complex dental case, as in a procedure that will require 2 or 3 visits, can be done in one visit. It is possible with today’s dental art technology. Sleep dentistry gives you a better option to have an extended dental treatment done in half or whole day.

What is sleep dentistry?

Sleep dentistry is a dental procedure that will put the patient in deep sleep by administering general anesthesia or intravenous (IV) sedation. The patient will not feel any pain, unaware of what’s happening around him and will not remember the procedure. Dentistry utilizing anesthesia or sedation is a safe way to reduce the fatigue of extended dental treatment requiring long visits.

There are two ways of administering sleep dentistry: intravenous (IV) sedation and general anesthesia. With IV sedation, the anesthesiologist administers varying amounts of sedative medication through an intravenous line. IV is fast acting and can be controlled by increasing or decreasing the medication depending on the patient’s needs. General anesthesia, on the other hand, produces a state of complete sleep different from one would normally experience because it blocks all memories and inhibit normal body reflexes to pain making the dental procedure easier to perform. The effects last for several hours after the treatment is complete. The patient will remain in the clinic until he is completely awake.

So, the next time you find yourself needing a complex dental procedure in the middle of a hectic schedule at work, you can choose to have a sleep dentistry procedure to complete the treatment with fewer visits to the dentist’s office.

Before, patients with special needs and other medical conditions find it difficult to receive dental treatment. Making them sit still on the dental chair for longer periods is a huge challenge for the treating dentist. Now, dental innovations in the special needs dentistry allow patients with disabilities needs to receive dental treatments like normal patients do. Sedation and sleep dentistry provide solutions to treat the once hard to treat patients with disabilities.

Patients with mental and developmental disabilities such as Down’s syndrome, Alzheimer’s, Cerebral Palsy and behavioral problems can undergo dental treatment by administering sedation or sleep dentistry. As each patient is different, dental treatment also varies. The treating dentist will conduct an evaluation of the patient’s dental health including mental and physical condition to determine which treatment applies to his case. If the patient suffers from simple anxiety problems, sedation dentistry will suffice. The procedure entails putting the patient in a complete relaxed state by administering sedative medications orally or intravenously. On the one hand, patients with special needs and those who exhibit dental phobia, sleep dentistry is recommended.

What is the difference between sedation and sleep dentistry?

Sedation and sleep dentistry are often interchanged in dental advertising. Both treatments are regarded as forms of sedation but the sedation and sleep dentistry are two different practices. Sedation dentistry uses sedative drugs that will alleviate the pain and anxiety during the procedure. The treating dentist will administer the sedative drug to put the patient in a deep state of relaxation. The patient will hardly recall the procedure but will remain awake and aware of his surroundings. On the other hand, sleep dentistry puts the patient in a deep level of sleep by administering general anesthesia. The patient has no recall of the procedure and unaware of his surroundings.

The treatment plan involves different levels of sedation. In the case of sedation dentistry, the treating dentist can administer oral sedative drugs, use laughing gas or administer intravenous or intramuscular sedative medications. The same procedure applies to sleep dentistry; the dentist may administer general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. The type of treatment depends on the needs of the patient.

Not all dentists are qualified to practice sleep and sedation dentistry, that’s why it is important to choose the dentist carefully. In the Plantation area in the state of Florida for example, before any Fort Lauderdale dentist can administer general anesthesia, he has to have completed one year medical residency in general anesthesia in a hospital. This is in addition to the training they received from the dental school. So before undertaking any sedation or sleep dentistry, inquire about your dentists’ education and level of training to see if he is indeed qualified to perform the specialized dental treatment.
